Tom J. Winnifrith was born in London. He completed his master's in classics at Corpus Christi College in Oxford and his doctorate in English literature at the University of Liverpool. He taught English and Classics at Eton College (1961-1966) and at the University of Warwick (1970-1999), where he was chairman of the Joint School of English and Comparative Studies until his retirement. Winnifrith has a particular interest in the Vlach minority and in southern Albania.
