In 1992, the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies issued its now-famous publication Emerging Microbial Threats to Health in the United States, edited by Drs Joshua Lederberg, Robert E. Shope, and Stanley C. Oaks (1). In the book, emerging infections are defined as "new, re-emerging or drug-resistant infections whose incidence in humans has increased within the past two decades or whose incidence threatens to increase in the near future." A number of factors were identified as reasons why emerging infections are a modern-day reality; no one factor could account for the problem. The same is still true today, and this multifactorial situation is reflected in the diversity of topics covered in this symposium.
