A young girl, criminally assaulted and nearly strangled in a dark gully known as the Ravine, loses all memory of the event. A second girl so attacked is murdered. She is discovered by her schoolmistress, Julie Warner, a fine artist, who cannot identify the man she saw leaning over the dead girl but thinks he looks like the devil and draws a picture of him.
Julie sets herself to snare the criminal and, in spite of police protection, is in serious danger from a sex maniac who realizes that, alive, she is a menace to his safety.
The author manages brilliantly to place the accent on fear and suspense, and the result is an engrossing novel that is something more than an ordinary thriller.
Kendal Young is the name under which Phyllis Brett Young (author of Psyche) writes her mystery novels.
