Someone is killing the shopkeepers of thirteenth-century York, and only Cordwainer can stop them. Sheriff de Bury is occupied chasing robbers on the high road outside Bootham Bar, and Thomas has gone north with Adam for the sheep-shearing. As the killings become increasingly gruesome, Cordwainer must overcome his disabilities to work alone to find the murderer.
