The politics and culture of Scotland, as a background to the Scottish Parliament.
In this treatment of the interplay between church and nation in Scotland, Storrar's thesis is that there have been three successive self-images of the nation: in the 14th and 15th centuries the "free nation"; in the 16th to 18th centuries the "godly nation"; and in the 19th and 20th the "moral nation" - with the undivided church setting a sacred and liturgical seal on the proud independence of the first period, the newly reformed church inspiring the covenanted and biblical godliness of the second, and the latterly declining church giving an afterglow of influence to the lofty secular ethic of the third.
