At his death Campbell had completed the 1st 1 & 1/3 of a 4-volume project. That this series will remain unfinished is one of the tragedies of modern literature. The intent was to trace the development of myth throughout history & the world. The 1st volume (The Way of the Animal Powers) covers the most ancient themes of the Paleolithic Great Hunt & its survival into modern, mostly native, cultures which still live by their agreement with the animals they hunt. Volume 2 (The Way of the Seeded Earth) was to deal with planting cultures & the myths of agriculture & the plant world. Of the three main centers of agricultural development (New World, the Far, Middle & Near East), he completed only the 1st & most recent. Volume 3 was to cover the systems based on astronomical & astrological insight. Volume 4 would've dealt with systems recognizing the human microcosm as a reflection of the macrocosm. A summary of his thoughts on these topics can be found in his Masks of God series. The portions of the Atlas which were completed are beautiful books, brilliantly presented, with insights & storytelling worthy of Campbell's genius.
