'Clow the Younger' seems one of the more beguiling of Australia's literary eccentrics. The list of his works here contains a couple of literary treasures, not least his Cy-Clowpedia or collected works, but none really surpass this play. It pioneers a view of Ned Kelly, in print at least - that of political insurgent and military leader. It is hard to see how a play in blank verse self-published in Ballarat had much influence on literary or popular perception but the way that ideas spread have little to do with logic. Clow dates his partisanship from the age of three and realising that 'strange to say .. no work of any magnitude dealing with Australien [sic] life has been published in blank verse' he has 'at last supplied' what was lacking in Australian letters.
