"...We seek in this book to offer not a warning about technology but rather a warning about the uses of it. We have seen in the course of human history that technology utilization frequently has unintended negative consequences. Too often societies and individuals have adopted technology based on utopian hopes rather than a careful consideration of all the existing evidence while also failing to examine how that technology may either fail or be utilized by those who are ignorant or have sinister or hidden intentions. It is apparent that society is susceptible to the music of the "pied pipers" as far as technology is concerned - the tendency is to rush to follow those with a positive view of technology (many with vested financial interests) without carefully considering where we are going or what we are doing, or who will benefit from adopting the technology being promoted. Unfortunately, we can no longer afford to follow blindly the path we are on (while certainly paved with promise) because it could indeed be a rocky future for both individuals and society as a whole. Promise, a wonderful paving material for dreams, is not the same thing as factual outcomes. This book is a message of "caution" for humanity: The path to the technological utopia that supposedly lies ahead may prove to be missing a bridge or two."
