Caitlin is a Healer—working her magick to ease the suffering of others. But she's fleeing a psychotic soldier who thinks she is a witch who killed his son! She has no choice but to leave the Isle of Skye and her beloved Uncle Wabi to find safety somewhere else. Uncle Wabi and his Jacobite sympathizer friends are in danger from Lord Warwick and Thomas, the innkeeper. Caitlin overhears them plotting to capture Jacobites who are trying to bring Bonnie Prince Charlie, claimant to the throne, to his rightful place.
Her decision to leave Skye takes the Healer on a journey filled with agonizing twists and turns. As she steals away in the night, ordinary events become extraordinary when she employs her unique abilities. Up to this point she has not been aware of her magickal powers and tries to ignore them. Finally, she's forced to acknowledge these powers by an Owl (one with a British accent!) who travels with her throughout her journey. Owl is an emissary for Uncle Wabi, who is actually a very old wizard who communicates with Owl frequently. In fact, they are old friends from another time and place.
The journey causes Caitlin to question many experiences in her early life and to give thought to what her future may be. Meeting several travelers along the way, Caitlin becomes involved with four Highland brothers, a Lady trying to escape her husband, and a Wolf that becomes a lifelong protector and loyal friend. She spends time in a Castle filled with stories of intrigue and mystery and learns some important lessons about life in this unlikely setting.
Caitlin uses her healing skills not just for curing physical ills, but she reaches further and finds herself drawn deep into the emotions and the inner workings of the minds of her varied and engrossing characters. She understands that true healing involves both aspects, physical and mental. Further, she believes a little magick can be found in everyone—but they must seek it
