Martin Martin's account of his voyage to St. Kilda is a classic of Scottish topography. Martin, a native of Skye, visited St. Kilda in 1697. An account of his trip was first published in 1698 as A Late Voyage to St. Kilda. A number of subsequent editions appeared; the fourth in 1753, with the title simply as A Voyage to St. Kilda.
This new edition in eBook format supplements the text with photographs taken by Cherry Kearton. These represent a selection of images used to illustrate his brother Richard's book With Nature and a Camera, first published in 1897. The Keartons' work is equally a classic, providing us with a documentary record of the St. Kildan way of life in late Victorian times.
The book is further supplemented by photographs taken by the editor from a visit made in July 2011. Thus the work presents a view of St. Kilda from the late 17th century to the present day, in a manner intended to whet the appetite of the reader into further interest and research. The St. Kilda archipelago is a World Heritage Site. Much material has already been written on St. Kilda but undoubtedly research into this fascinating heritage will continue as new perspectives emerge.
