From the Preface - 'This book does not claim to be particularly original in content, but it may be thought a little unusual, even eccentric, in emphasis. I have tried to do at least three things:
1. To place most stress where earlier English works on the period have laid least, in the belief that the eighteenth century revolution in political ideas, in artistic styles, and in industrial techniques was ultimately more important than any revolution in diplomatic alignments or the art of war.
2. To concentrate on those developments that throw light on the nineteenth century rather than those that focus on the afterglow of the seventeenth.
3.To quote extensively from contemporary sources, on the principle that what Frederick the great wrote before a campaign is as much a part of history as what he did during it.'
