One memorable holiday, I can’t remember exactly when, but it was during the Pheasant shooting season and quite mild, so it must have been around October, the whole family descended on my aunt and uncle’s house for a shooting party. I’ve always detested blood sports and still do, so I didn’t take part and was vocal about my disapproval too.

I was particularly pissed off with my brother who didn’t really like shooting either but went along anyway. The assembled family, all the dogs and a few hangers-on went off on the shoot, leaving me behind. I had settled down on one of the tatty but huge sofas in the den with a book when I heard someone in the house. I don’t mind telling you that I was scared; for one thing, it was in the middle of nowhere, I felt quite vulnerable and everyone was going to be gone for ages, though I was fairly sure that the gardener was about somewhere, so I thought it might be him having come in to get a drink or something. I stayed still and quiet, with my ears pricked for sounds of anyone approaching my snug retreat.
