In 1941, Ho Weng Toh, known amongst friends as 'Winkie' and 'Daddy-O', had his studies at Hong Kong University interrupted by the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.
He managed to escape into free China and answered to the call for pilot training in the Chinese Air Force and was sent to USA for training and succeeded to get his wings in 1944. On his return to China, he was assigned to the 1st Bomb Squadron of the Chinese America Composite Wing, which was part of the Gen. Chennault's Flying Tigers, and flew bombing missions on the B25.
Post WWII, he flew for Central Air Transport Corporation while based in Shanghai till 1949. After spending a decade in turbulent China, he finally landed back in Malaya and started his flying career with Malayan Airways Limited, becoming one of the earliest local pioneer intakes.
Because of his vast flying experience in China, he eventually found himself in the flight training departments of Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) and later Singapore International Airlines (SIA). And from 1961 till his retirement in 1980, he played a pivotal role in nurturing and training many local pilots who later became successful Commanders of SIA.
