Sandra Moore began her writing career in the office of a U.S. Senator and worked as a journalist focusing on stories about children and families. She and her family live close to the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. where she first encountered the protagonist of this story -- a bonsai tree that is nearly 400 years old, and miraculously survived the bombing of Hiroshima. She felt that the Japanese family's devotion to the tree, and their ultimate decision to donate it to America in an act of reconciliation and peacemaking would inspire young readers. Ms. Moore's roots are in on the coast of Maine, which shares with Japan a wealth of islands that are dotted with magnificent pine trees.
